Welcome to Taunton U3A

Jazz Appreciation Group

Thursday July 24th

Geoff Nichols

Will be talking about his 65 years a band leader. Geoff formed the Avon Cities Jazz Band in 1949, the time when Ken Colyer was forming the Crane River Band and Chris Barber was starting his first band.

Unlike many of the New Orleans Revival bands of that period, Geoff’s band went on to explore other musical areas, from Basie to Van Morrison, via skiffle and r ‘n’ b. That doyen of jazz writers, Digby Fairweather, says: “the band’s numerous vinyl albums are worth searching out for their challenging repertoire, ingenious arranging and high level of performance.” Geoff has only recently retired from active music-making – to Minehead, where he has joined Minehead U3A.

We all love the music – find out what’s it’s like to play it for a living.

Do join us – all welcome.
